AmazonのKindleを持っていますが、これまでAmazonで有料の電子書籍を購入したことがまだなく、Webで一般に公開されている書籍のデータを自分のPCで変換して取り込んでいます。

コンピュータ科学で有名な教科書 Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP) をKindleのMobi形式に変換して公開している人もいます。
